debate about it. >> the other question it raised in your article is the obama administration asked the faa to speed up processing of integrated drones into civilian air space. they could be used by police departments, farmers, builders, hollywood, but with this progress comes some concern, right? >> absolutely. so the article by my wonderful colleague lev grossman, i believe the cover line is "drones come home." what he did is after explaining to people how much we're relying on drone technology abroad for national security, he's saying what people may be even less aware of is the degree to which they are about to come back and really explode in their domestic use. law enforcement, border control, possibly paparazzi flying little drones over the backyards or god forbid up to the windows of celebrities and a variety of other uses. everything from farmers using them to look at their crops to real estate agents who are creating little videos of properties they're trying to sell. there are a lot of promising aspects of this, as with most any technology. for instance, the internet, it's

. >> al, thank you. this morning lawmakers are getting nuances about why the obama administration believes it is okay to use drones to kill expected terrorists including americans. it's an issue that will be key at today's confirmation hearing for the president's pick for cia. michael isikoff is calling this story for us. michael, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. drone strikes, the obama administration's weapon of choice against terrorists are coming under scrutiny. after a disclosure justice department document obtained by nbc news this week that justifies the targeted killing of americans suspected of being top al qaeda leaders. for the first time today the white house is sharing the classified memo that lays out the legal basis for such strikes with members of the house and senate intelligence committees. the move comes at a crucial time as john brenan, president obama's nominee to be cia director, faces his confirmation hearing today on capitol hill. in the war over drone strikes, a major reversal from the white house. after years of ironclad secrecy, president obama directed t

the capacity to deliver a blow to them. gregg: president obama has repeatedly said and his administration has said the military option is on the table. is that rhetoric in your judgment? is it sincere? does it need you to believe that in the end israel will be forced to act unilaterally? >> what's most important is what do the iranians believe? they don't believe that rhetoric. they have watched us wire brush the israelis in public for inching closer to a military option. the iranians interpret that that we don't have the stomach ourselves for the military option. they don't take it seriously. netanyahu said to us months ago that this summer is when he believes the iranians will cross the red line. and he will be forced to conduct some unilateral military action. it appears that will become a reality. gregg: iran's foreign minister claims his country is set to do a deal with the west to diffuse the situation. is that just a ploy, they are borrowing a page out of the iranian nuclear play book? it's a shell game and they are playing us? >> if you asked any american on the street. put a micropho

is defending the obama administration's attack to the benghazi attack. he says the u.s. didn't have time to respond to that attack. here is a bit of his interview over the weekend. >> this is not 911. you can't call and expect within two minutes to have a team in place. it takes time. that's the nature of it. our people are there, they are in position to move. but we have to have good intelligence that gives us a heads up something is going to happen. martha: leon panetta is set to testify thursday. lindsey graham has been pushing for that. a lot of questions about this. in terms of that timing just to adress whole issue, this isn't a 911 call. i remember john mccain say egg we lost two of those people in a 7 or 8-hour change. that would make him a tough statement for him to defend on. >> you heard other people familiar with the assets in the region suggest that we could have had a flyover to try to disperse this angry crowd. what i found interesting about what secretary panetta said. he seems to be blaming the intelligence community saying we need better intelligence. certainly there ar

. martha: what do you think it tells us about the obama administration's policy towards the war on terror? >> i think a couple of things. they don't want to get their fingers dirty. they don't want american casualties. known wants that. the problem i think is three in the whole drone war idea, number one we may have been very good at the very beginning when we were taking out key people in very difficult to reach parts of pakistan and afghanistan but we've now expanded that drone war and are the third thing martha that worries me probably more than anything we are lowering the threshold of when we use force. it's an important thing to have americans in the loop. by doing something where no americans are at risk. martha: it negates your ability to get intelligence from any of these individuals. >> yeah, they are dead. martha: we know the president is not fond of the gitmo model. it raises a lot of questions about the most useful way to apprehend people and get information from them. as far as we know, right we are talking about anwar al-awlaki, and american-born citizen who we know was an

the administration justifies the targeted killing of american citizens. the white house says president obama has directed the department of justice to brief members of the intelligence committees. the move comes after a bipartisan group of 11 senators led by democratic senator ron wyden of oregon called for more insight into the government's legal rationale for drone strikes against americans abroad. senator wyden said on twitter, "every american has the right to know when their government believes it's allowed to kill them." this followed the leaked white house memo obtained by nbc news this week detailing criteria required for such a strike. this is all unfolding before today's senate confirmation hearing for john brennan, nominated to be the next head of the cia. and andrea mitchell, i wonder if this could, in any way, get in the way of brennan again. >> well, this is so much in a state of flux right now. clearly, i mean, the president's called to senator wyden last night, so unusual to try to reassure him and try to ward off what could be a calamitous hearing today. the fact is that brennan

the obama administration to do the right thing with this policy but you can't trust subsequent administrations. what if a neocon administration comes in after this? you can't trust them to use the policy in the right way. >> stephanie: my friend sent me this. she said this is a review from her friend who is a vietnam vet. just saw "zero dark thirty" and was disgusted by the politics of the film. torture a guy find bin laden three, find bin laden. no way you cannot see torture as a crucial element in finding bin laden. credit the torturers as heroes. the ends justifies the means. it isn't true. it is a fabrication. no credible evidence that led to bin laden's evidence was obtained by torture. human right abuses forced victims into giving up wrongful information that hurt our intelligence effort. "zero dark thirty" justifies america's use of torture incredibly reprehensible. it is dirty harry of our age. justify breaking the law and all moral codes endorse human rights violations, teach americans that abu ghraib torturing of americans is good. >> that's why i won't see it. >> ste

on coordinating with democratic senators or dealing with the administration's own efts to support president obama's priorities. how critical, joy, is party unity to the president's seblgd term agenda? >> well, absolutely critical. because harry reid decided not to do full-on filibuster reform, he still has to get through the senate and with 60 votes. and on the house side, obviously, the same thing applies. now that john boehner has broken the rule, that he's willing to move bills through with democrats as well as republicans, he still needs to hold together enough democrats so you don't see them walk away with some of these ideas. the main thing that the president has going for him is not so much the party unanimity. they are almost sort of left out in the cold because the establishment is pushing them back. they no longer have an interest in them. they want them to sit down and be kwooit because they're embarrassing them. >> five days before the state of the union address and the president seems to have done well pushing forward on his agenda. got passed the fiscal cliff. immigration front and
